About Us - sports fields specialists

My name is Mike Dunn......I have been in the sports field business for over 15 years. I'm the owner of SFS Sports Field Specialists. I am also the head groundskeeper and turf management specialist for Cooperstown All Star Village. I am at home on a baseball field!

I started out with my own lawncare business, first just doing lawns, then moving up to landscape design for patios, walkways and ponds. I loved making people's home look more beautiful with a gorgeous landscaped yard. However I wanted to do more, this really wasn't challenging enough for me. So in my spare time in my back yard, I started making different designs and patterns with my riding mower and roller. I learned that pretty much anything you can think up.......you can design on grass. Once I learned this I was ready to give it a try on a ball field.

I started off by helping to build a little league field in the area I was living in. From there I went to giving the kids a different design for every game. Lets just say they were sad to see me leave when I moved away, but I trained the new groundskeeper so he could keep the kids happy.

In moving on to bigger things I took over a minor league facility........and my designs got bigger and better and on the larger fields more creative. People would come each week to see what new design I put down. I'd get comments sent to me and pictures that people had taken while there. It turned into a game with some of them to see if they could catch me reusing the same pattern during any one season. It was a lot of fun, and I was sad when I left. But.....

Now I am the head groundskeeper and turf management specialist for an eight field complex. The owner lets me do any design I come up with. Those fields are my pride and joy and with eight fields to choose from you never know what you might see. I love what I do and can't imagine doing anything else. To see the smiles on kids faces when they play on a field that looks and performs like a major league field, and knowing it is an experience they will carry with them forever, is a huge reward. I look forward to one week ending and redoing the patterns for the next group coming in.

Another passion of mine is teaching people the art of what I do. I believe that anyone with the patience and will can learn to beautify their grounds/lawns and take pride in doing it. If you can imagine it, you can pretty much do it. I get very passionate about my work. I enjoy giving presentations about what I do and how you could do it to.

I'm also proud to introduce you to my assistant and right arm. My daughter Ashley. She's worked with me both with the business and on my grounds crew few the last 5 years. She's a full time student going for her major in sports therapy. Without having her to count on to run things when I'm otherwise committed things would not flow as easily as they do.

Individually introducing you to the people you may meet if we come to you would be difficult. In a group however, the guys have worked for me in my business and also on my grounds crew for the last 10 years combined. A great bunch of guys that can counted on to get the job done and done right.
